The Apollo-era Circular Star Chart Device (SKB 32100056-201 S/N 1002) shown above was used by Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7 LMP) during astronavigation training in preparation for Apollo 7.  This 9.5” circular device consists of a rotating plastic star map mounted in a translucent semi-circular sleeve showing orbital period and other reference marks. The chart comes with its original plastic bag (bearing a NASA-MSC processing sticker) and instruction sheet.

This “star wheel” model was commonly flown on Gemini missions (and seems to be a Gemini-specific design), but appears to have become a training-only device by the time of Apollo (in which rectangular charts were most common).  All Apollo-era exemplars of these circular star charts are “training-used,” and to my knowledge, no flown examples from Apollo have come to market.

This item was first offered for sale to the public direct from Walt Cunningham’s personal collection in the 21st Lunar Legacies Auction (Nov 19, 2016) as part of Lot #271. It is accompanied by signed certification letters from Cunningham as well as Don Willis (the owner of Lunar Legacies).
