Sure to be the most unique item in your collection! A vintage KSC employee-made lucite bolo tie clasp (c. 1973) bearing flown material from three lunar missions! This bolo clasp measures 25 x 42 x 11mm, and features flown heatshield fragments from Apollo 11 and 12, and flown Kapton from Apollo 13—all showing the effects of thermal ablation and extreme heating.
This piece was clearly made by an employee at KSC, and was likely worn during the program. A clear platic sheet inside the lucuite labels the artifacts "Apollo Insulation, 11, 12, 13". Embedded artifacts are nice large pieces (Apollo 11 Heatshield = 5mm; Apollo 12 Heatshield = 7mm; Apollo 13 kapton = 9mm).The lucite and artifacts are floating above a white pearlescent background layer which looks AMAZING in the sunlight (and relly shows of the embedded artifacts nicely).
Condition is fine. Lucite has yellowed a bit with age, but it in no way affects visibility or artifacts nor the aesthetics of the piece. Also, no signifcant scratches to surface. Very nice and unique piece—and a definite conversation-starter!
Employee-made lucites are rare and desirable, and this is the first bolo tie clasp we've ever seen. The tie clasp is glued onto the reverse, and is not visible from the front. If you don't want to wear it, the artifact can be displayed standing upright, or laying down. Either way, it looks superb!
