Vintage STS-2 Manual used by NASA’s “Crimson” Flight Director, Don Puddy, in preparation for the STS-2 mission.
This STS-2 Payload Systems Data and Malfunction Procedures manual comes directly from the personal collection of “Crimson” Flight Director, Don Puddy. It is signed "Puddy" in the upper right corner. The manual contains seven large fold-out schematics for the OSTA-1 Pallet System, along with thirteen technical documents divided into 8 tabbed sections. As NASA’s tenth Flight Director, Puddy led the “Crimson” flight control team on Apollo 17, Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, Skylab, the Shuttle ALT tests, STS-1, and STS-2. Prior to that, he was TELMU for much of the Apollo program, including Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 (during which he played a key role in the development of the Lunar Module “lifeboat” procedures that saved the crew, and which earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom). In 1987, Puddy became head of the Flight Crew Operations Division (FCOD), charged with all aspects of crew selection and mission management. He retired from NASA in 1995.
