Rare “working copy” of an engineer’s binder featuring technical documents pertaining to the Space Shuttle’s Main Engine (SSME).

These documents date from the inception of the program through 1985 and thus pertain to the design configuration of OV-102 (Columbia) through OV-104 (Atlantis).

This example comes from the estate of NASA/USBI (United Space Booster Inc) engineer Frank R. Batty, and would have been used on a daily basis. The binder features an applied label reading “Space Shuttle Interface Control Document,” along with Batty’s annotation “Orbiter SSME [Space Shuttle Main Engine]” The binder is slightly over 1” thick, and featured ~15 very large fold-out schematics, scores of technical drawings, and hundreds of Interface Control Documents filled with the arcana of propulsion engineering.

Frank Richard Batty graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After being selected to the US Army Guided Missile Program, he was transferred to Huntsville, Alabama, where he began his career in NASA. He played an instrumental role in the Skylab program, helping to develop the Twin Pole Sail Parasol. Later, as Senior VP at United Space Booster Inc (USBI), he was responsible for the Space Shuttle's Booster program and helped to launch over 20 successful shuttle missions. He was awarded the Astronauts' Silver Snoopy Award for his contributions to the Space Shuttle Program, NASA’s Exceptional Service Medal in 1974, and NASA’s Public Service Medal in 1988.

Don’t miss this opportunity to own a period working document from a senior Shuttle engineer!
